What is ITFS Platform?

Trade Finance Services

The IFSCA-regulated digital platform where exporters and importers get trade invoices financed by global financiers — faster, and at better rates.

Understanding ITFS: What It Means and Why It Exists

ITFS (International Trade Financing Services) is a digital platform, authorised by the International Financial Services Centres Authority (IFSCA), that helps exporters and importers get their trade invoices financed by multiple global financiers — rather than relying on a single bank.

Example :- Say you’re an exporter who has just shipped goods worth $50,000 to a buyer overseas, but your buyer’s payment terms are 90 days.

Traditional Route

EXPORTER

Goods shipped to buyer overseas

Invoice raised with 90 days payment terms

Invoice raised with 90 days payment terms

Supplier gets the payment

ITFS (Invoice Discounting Platform)

EXPORTER

Goods shipped to buyer overseas

invoice raised with 90 days payment terms

Financiers bid to fund the invoice for buyer

Financiers get paid on 90 days by buyer

"The global trade finance gap is estimated at over $2.5 trillion — ITFS platforms exist to help close that gap digitally."

Multilateral bodies have repeatedly documented this shortfall — a gap traditional banking alone hasn't closed, particularly for smaller exporters and importers who lack the collateral and relationships that legacy trade finance demands.

Who It's Built For

Four core participants, one platform

ITFS platforms are built around four core participants, each playing a distinct role in the transaction:

Exporters

List export receivables and get them financed early, without waiting out the buyer’s payment cycle.

Importers

Access financing to pay overseas suppliers on time, Strengthening supplier relationships and negotiating power.

Financiers

Banks, factors, funds, and NBFCs that bid to finance trade transactions via a regulated marketplace.

Insurers & Others

Entities offering credit insurance and risk mitigation, strengthening financier confidence and pricing.

Why Use ITFS?

Benefits for Every Stakeholder

Faster access to working capital

Convert receivables into cash in days, not months, without waiting out the buyer's payment cycle.

Competitive pricing

Multiple financiers bid on your invoice, so you're not stuck with one bank's rate.

Reduced dependence on Letters of Credit:

Access financing without requiring the overseas buyer to open an LC.

Access to financiers you've never banked with

Reach global financiers beyond your existing relationships.

On-time supplier payments

Access financing to pay overseas suppliers promptly, even when your own receivables haven't come in yet.

Stronger supplier relationships

Timely payment improves negotiating power and terms with overseas suppliers over time.

Flexible short-term funding

Cover payment cycles without tying up long-term credit lines.

Digital, paperless process

Apply and get financed online, without the physical documentation traditional trade finance often demands.

Access to a curated deal flow

View vetted, KYC-checked trade finance units without needing to originate each deal individually.

Expand reach without physical presence

Bid on and finance trade transactions in markets where you don't have a branch or local entity.

Transparent, competitive bidding

Price deals on your own terms within a regulated, rules-based marketplace.

No platform-level credit exposure

The ITFS platform itself doesn't carry credit risk; financiers manage their own risk independently, within a framework built for transparency and compliance.

Turn Credit Protection Into Trade Finance Opportunity

Provide credit protection for factoring transactions and become part of the financing ecosystem supporting cross-border trade.

Enable More Capital-Efficient Financing

Eligible credit protection can help financiers access capital relief under IFSCA's framework, subject to prescribed conditions.

Expand Into Cross-Border Trade

Participate in India's growing international receivables financing ecosystem by supporting exporters, buyers and financiers across borders.

Participate in a Regulated Trade Finance Ecosystem

Build your role in an ecosystem operating within the regulatory framework of GIFT IFSC and IFSCA.

Who It's Built For

How Does an ITFS Platform Work?

A Simple 5-Step journey from invoice to instant working capital

Invoice / Trade Unit Upload

The exporter (or importer) uploads trade documents invoice, purchase order, shipping/customs documents which are converted into a "Trade Finance Unit" (TFU) on the platform.

Bidding by Financiers

Registered global financiers view the TFU and place bids either on whole turnover basis or invoice basis, offering to finance the invoice at a specific discount rate.

Selection & Financing

The exporter/importer selects the most competitive bid. Funds are disbursed digitally, converting the receivable into immediate working capital.

Onboarding

The exporter, importer, or financier registers on the platform after completing KYC/AML and eligibility checks as per IFSCA norms.

Settlement

On the invoice due date, the buyer pays the invoice amount, which is settled with the financier — closing the transaction loop.

Regulatory Framework

IFSCA & GIFT City: Why ITFS Was Introduced

ITFS platforms don't operate in a regulatory vacuum — they're built and supervised under a specific framework, in a specific jurisdiction. Understanding both explains why ITFS exists in its current form.

GIFT City

Gujarat International Finance Tec-City, Gandhinagar

India’s first International Financial Services Centre (IFSC) — a dedicated jurisdiction created to bring international financial services business back onto Indian-regulated soil, business that Indian companies were often sourcing from hubs like Singapore, London, or Dubai.

IFSCA

International Financial Services Centres Authority

ITFS platforms don’t operate in a regulatory vacuum — they’re built and supervised under a specific framework, in a specific jurisdiction. Understanding both explains why ITFS exists in its current form.

Why was ITFS introduced in the first place?

A few concrete reasons sit behind the policy

A well-documented global trade finance gap

Multilateral bodies like the Asian Development Bank have repeatedly estimated the shortfall in the trillions of dollars — a gap traditional banking alone hasn't closed, particularly for smaller exporters and importers.

GIFT IFSC's mandate to become a global financial services hub

reducing dependence on offshore centres for services Indian businesses were already using.

MSME exporters/importers were underserved by traditional trade finance

which tends to favour large, established clients with strong banking relationships and collateral.

Reducing overdependence on Letters of Credit

which are slow, paperwork-heavy, and require overseas buyers to route through their own bank's processes.

Letting foreign financiers participate without a physical presence in India

a digital platform allows an overseas financier to bid on Indian trade receivables without setting up a local branch.

Introducing price competition into trade finance

through a bidding mechanism, instead of leaving exporters/importers dependent on a single relationship bank's rate.

Compliance Requirements for Every Authorised ITFS Platform

Onboard financiers only from FATF-compliant jurisdictions; maintain AML/KYC checks and annual IT audits; set up a formal grievance redressal mechanism; and operate without carrying credit risk itself — that risk sits with the individual financiers who choose to fund a transaction.
